Hair loss treatment for men has greatly improved in the past few years.  The two main drugs that are used to improve the appearance of existing hair are finasteride and minoxidil.  These two drugs reduce the speed at which hair is lost, increase the length and diameter of existing hair and also increase hair growth.  Minoxidil is more often used to stimulate hair growth in with mild or moderate alopecia areata.  It has been observed to have a forty percent response rate in this treatment.  Despite this level of success minoxidil may not be helpful in hair loss treatment for men with the most severe forms of alopecia areata, this will normally be a situation where all the scalp hair is lost (alopecia totalis).

The main types of hair loss in men are: Male Pattern Baldness, Alopecia Areata and Telogen Effluvium.  The most common form of hair loss is male-pattern baldness, which is also called androgenic alopecia; and it affects both men and women.  Alopecia areata is another type of hair loss, which involves patches of baldness that may come and go at random. It may affect mostly teenagers and be hereditary.  According to statistics, one in one-hundred persons is affected by alopecia areata, and one in five persons will derive it from family traits.  It is believed to be caused by a problem in the immune system and though there is no proven treatment, the hair will normally grow back within a year.  A fifth of people with this form of hair loss may develop more severe forms of hair loss, especially when not properly treated.  Telogen effluvium is the third most common type of hair loss (alopecia).  This involves widespread thinning of the hair, rather than specific bald patches.  Hair is shed from the scalp and from other areas of the body, usually as a reaction to stress or medication.  Telogen effluvium tends to go away on its own after several months.
